Who is eligible to join and how much does it cost?

All men and women over thirty years of age are eligible to join, be they social, amateur or professional. Membership is under $50. 

What age groups do they compete in?

Competition is carried out in five year age groups for both men and women, for example M30 equals men aged 30-34 years, W45 equals women aged 45-49 years. 

Is there anything I should do before competing?

Unless you have been involved in regular exercise for many years then a medical examination is advised.  

Does the Association compete at Interclub competition?

Tasmanian Masters Athletics Inc. (TMA) is an affiliated Club with Athletics Tasmania (AT) and, as such competes as a Club in the various Branch & State competitions (particularly in the south). See ‘Scenario 2’ of our How to join page for directions on how to set up your dual membership. 

Are records for each event kept?

Our Statistician maintains records for all events, in the various age groups, along with the processing of claims for National and World records. 

What other events or activities are conducted?

We conduct regular fun runs in both the North and the South of the state. These are usually on a Sunday. Fun runs usually include a cuppa or BBQ, whereby members can relax with their family and enjoy the more social aspects of our association. 

Can a current member of another athletic club join?

Yes. The benefits of dual membership include eligibility for all Masters competition at local, state, national and international levels. TMA members also receive the TMA Weekly News. See ‘Scenario 2’ of our How to join page for directions on how to set up your dual membership. 

 

What competition is available?

  • Road and Cross Country  

TMA conducts a varied program of fun runs and recreational walk in the south of the state and occasionally in the north. Events are usually conducted at 10am on a Sunday. Events are listed on the TMA website and in the TMA Weekly News. If you have signed up for ‘Out of Stadium’ (OOS) competition you can also compete in the Athletics South winter competition. 

  • Track & Field 

Events are held weekly from October to March on Wednesday evenings in Hobart and on Saturdays in Launceston. Programs vary, but include sprints, middle distance and longer running events, a walking event, throwing disciplines and jumping events. If you wish to compete in Athletics South’s track & field events on Saturdays through summer you will need to have signed up for ‘All Competition’, this will also allow you to compete in the winter ‘Out of Stadium’ (OOS) competition. 

  • Championships  

TMA conducts championships annually. Medals are awarded in each 5-year age groups.  

  • Track & Field Championships - usually February or March  
  • Road Championships - usually May  
  • Cross Country Championships - usually July or August 

TMA is part of the worldwide organisation for masters’ athletics and members are eligible and encouraged to compete in both national and international championships. There is no minimum standard required to participate. See the Australian Masters Athletics and World Masters Athletics sites for upcoming events. 

  • TMA parkrun sealed handicap 

On the last Saturday of each month, TMA conducts a sealed handicap event based on the parkruns of financial members on that day. Handicaps are based on members’ most recent parkrun performances. To enter, members should email their parkrun bar code number to Mike Walker at [email protected] 

Where can I buy a TMA Uniforms?

Members are encouraged to “show the colours” on as many occasions as possible to promote masters athletics in the community. However, our uniforms are not mandatory unless you are competing in Athletics South competition or masters championships (state and national).
